Dr. Ng Beng Yeong conduct psychiatric evaluations to diagnose mental health conditions. This often involves clinical interviews, assessments and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. He is a strong believer in patient advocacy, he has conducted more than 100 outreach talks and programmes to educate the public on various mental health issues like insomnia, sleep problems, stress management, anxiety disorder, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, chronic pain and psychosexual problems. Apart from adults, Dr Ng is also experienced in the management of children and teenagers.
He is member of the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) for psychiatry (2013 till present), Deputy Chief Examiner for MMed (Psychiatry) exam in 2014 and member of the Standard Setting Committee for Psychiatry exams in 2014 and 2015.
He is Board member, editorial team, Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment (2004 – current) and Co-editor of ASEAN Journal of Psychiatry (2010 – current). He is one of the editors of the highly successful core textbooks for undergraduates ‘Mastering Psychiatry’ which is now in its 4th edition.
He is also known for his research in dissociative trance disorder, which was done when he worked at the Institute of Mental Health. He was President of Singapore Sleep Society from 2006 to 2008. He is the founding President of College of Psychiatrists.
Active in professional groups, he was the Associate Editor and Treasurer of Annals (2005 – 2016), and is the Chairman of Lejia Society (2008 – current), a society that focuses on mental health issues within the community.
Over the years, he has won accolades for his teaching and mentoring of medical students and junior staff. The awards that he has garnered include the following: Pioneer Award from Duke NUS, 2011, SingHealth Best Mentor Award, 2012, Duke-NUS Faculty Appreciation Award, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, NUS Medical Society Outstanding Tutor Award in 2013, YLL Role Model Award for Graduating Class 2014, and NUS YLL Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence, Oct 2015. His recent contribution is the co-editing of the book, ‘Mental Health of a Nation, 1993-2015’, which captures the historical developments of mental health services in the country, together with Dr Daniel Fung, CMB of IMH. The book will be launched soon.
Dr Ng was Head of Department, Psychiatry, SGH, from 1 July 2006 to 31 Dec 2015. His book, ‘Till the break of day: a history of mental health services in Singapore, 1841-1993’ is often used as a reference text by many young psychiatrists and mental health professionals in the country. The book is now in its second edition.
Dr Ng Beng Yeong received his medical education and postgraduate training in Psychiatry in Singapore. He was subsequently awarded a scholarship to pursue his interest in Organic Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, UK. He was a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist with the Department of Psychiatry and Sleep Disorders Unit, Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He also ran sessions at the Urology Centre, Singapore General Hospital, where he treated patients with sexual concerns.
